The above combined intro to Singing for Non-Singers includes information from two workshops – “Fundamentals of Singing” and “Style & Authenticity” – as presented for Girls Rock Detroit.
I love teaching a third of the time. My ideal work balance is 1/3 composing, 1/3 performing, 1/3 teaching. I think doing any one of these things %100 of the time could drive me %100 nuts, and I think I’m better at all three for actively doing the other two! So, I love teaching 1/3 of the time, and %100 of the time I’m teaching, I love it!
Some background for my people who don’t know: I earned my bachelors in Music Education from Oakland University. I also got my performance degree there, but it was the Ed program that really blew my mind and got me deep into all things that intersect with education – behavioral psychology, theory, pedagogy, etc. Under the tutelage of Deborah Blair – co-creator of Exceptional Pedagogy For Children With Exceptionalities: International Perspectives – and Jackie Wiggins – Teaching for Musical Understanding – I developed a dedicated skillset to match my passion for the unique function of music in society. Continuing education for me has focused on Self and Other Awareness Through Music, and Music + Intersectionality. I’m as passionate about helping others overcome obstacles and develop their unique voice as I am about my own, and fortunate that my work as a composer and performer has taken me across the world and through several genres of music; experiences which inform my teaching.
The above combined intro to Singing for Non-Singers includes core information from two workshops – “Fundamentals of Singing” and “Style & Authenticity” – as presented for Girls Rock Detroit. If you’re at all interested in singing, check it out! This coming Tuesday, April 26th/Wednesday, April 27th (check against time zone) person’s who watch this or attended the aforementioned workshops are also invited to Masterclass
A masterclass allows musicians to sing or play through their songs, and then once they are done, have a teacher critique them, giving them advice on vocal, instrumental, or performance technique.
It sounds scary, but you only need participate to your level of comfort 🙂 If that’s attending as an observer only, you still learn a lot from these sessions! Attendance is by donation, and proceeds benefit Girls Rock Detroit. Register here.
