Science for Sociopaths feat Natasha Hine: A Gallery

Welcome, new patrons! ✨
I’m so glad you’re here. Whether you’ve just joined us or have been along for the ride for a minute, thank you for supporting this ever-evolving journey of music, exploration, and brave-making. Your presence allows this work to deepen, reach further, and be shared with care.

This time last week, I was performing as Science for Sociopaths with the luminous Natasha Hine at The Button Factory, in what I believe was the sixth live iteration of the Elodie song cycle. It was an emotional and validating experience — for me, and for many of you who were there.

Natasha’s bespoke approach to the visual component of the show highlighted her expansive artistic scope and comfort across mediums. She brought a smorgasbord of materials — paints, glitter, buttons, dried flowers, and more — and invited the audience to co-create a collaborative tapestry. Her chosen canvas? A 1.4 x 2.5 meter fabric scroll, cotton front and plastic back, rolled out like a scroll across the floor in front of the stage. Participants contributed chronologically from right to left, guided only by ten faint markers — one for each song in the cycle. As the performance unfolded, so did the narrative arc of the tapestry, blurring song into song, image into image.

Here’s what some of you had to say:

“Never seen or experienced anything like it. I felt like I was in New York!”
“Nurturing and uplifting.”
“It was healing and surprising for me in ways beyond what I could have imagined.”

I couldn’t ask for more affirming feedback. For me, this iteration saw the second employment of a tear-inducing poetic script between songs — new material that deepened the emotional landscape of the work and caught in my throat during performance. Once upon a time, I couldn’t get through some of these songs without overwhelm. Now, with time, I can channel the emotion without being overcome — but as always, new elements bring fresh terrain to navigate. The emotional content is increasingly balanced by my inner intellectual, who is finding satisfaction in considering placements of cluster chords, major seconds, unexpected harmonies that “mirror internal dissonance, emotional fracture, and fragile hope”, and Elodie’s “ellipses motif” —a repeated three-note theme “that appears as a musical whisper of unsaid things, of silence and omission, of a girl still searching for language.”

And that’s the point. This process isn’t about arriving. It’s about continuing. Feeling through. Every performance reaffirms that we’re onto something.

🌀 We’ve also trimmed the song cycle from 12 to 10 songs to better serve the arc of the work.
🎥 A video by local artist Temuri Tsiklauri is forthcoming.

🎶 Student Sponsorship Spotlight

Exciting news!

Christian – our scholarship student singing with the renowned Detroit Youth Choir – is singing her first solo, Wheels of a Dream from the musical Ragtime, at DYC’s upcoming spring concert! Christian came to me via Girls Rock Detroit and is currently taking two online hourly lessons per week. Subsidizing Christian’s lessons costs $400/month. Every bit helps!

Hughie – one of our phenomenal students – has landed the lead role in Shrek Jr with Glass Ceiling Arts Collective. The Glass Ceiling Arts Collective is a charity which supports people from marginalised communities, especially young people with disabilities. “Bring the whole family to see this unique performance of Shrek The Musical Jr. performed by a cast of youth, with and without disabilities. These young thespians, some of whom were born to be on the stage, will delight you like no show has ever before.” Hughie’s lessons are supported by Home Support North Charitable Trust 💜

🎵 Seeking Sponsors! Maggie Cocco Music is seeking sponsors for two differently-abled adult students with limited income:

  • Tony – Studies for one hour per week. A passionate singer like his father before him, Tony is preparing to pass his Grade 5 Music Theory Exams. Subsidy needed: $30/week.
  • Joey – Studies for one hour per week. Joey has already created three albums and is now working on his first album of all-original music. Subsidy needed: $30/week.

Finances should never be a barrier to living your best life! Maggie Cocco Music offers Pay What You Can services to ensure quality music education is accessible to all.

💡 No student is ever turned away due to lack of sponsorship—if sponsorship isn’t secured, I donate my time to ensure they still receive their lessons. .
